Shark fin fakes

MORE than 560 kilograms of fake shark fin was found on sale at markets in Zhejiang Province in recent weeks, all from south China's Guangdong Province.

Since December, the Zhejiang Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau and the Consumers' Rights Protection Commission has checked more than 600 stores and some 300 restaurants selling shark fin in the province.

In addition to the market discoveries, 12 restaurants were also found to be selling fake shark fin.

The commission said the fake shark fin was made from bean noodles and gelatin. It added that some gelatin is toxic.

Shark fin has long been a staple of high-end Chinese banquets and its consumption is becoming more commonplace as incomes rise. In the market, a kilo of shark fin sells for more than 1,000 yuan (US$160), while a small bowl of shark fin soup can cost hundreds of yuan in restaurants.
