Sights and smells of New Year

CHINESE New Year is coming, bringing plenty of hustle and bustle. Red lanterns adorn streets and residential communities, crowds flood train stations and airports, people prepare food and decorate their apartments.

Shanghai Daily journalists wandered through Hangzhou to capture the city’s nianwei — literally meaning the “smell of New Year.”

The smells are everywhere — like preserved poultry meat and homemade sausage hung in the warm sunshine. This is popular food with Hangzhou locals and always makes an appearance on tables during Lunar New Year. The ducks and chickens are immersed in soy sauce overnight and then hung on windows for ventilation.

Stewed foods are another popular seasonal treat in Hangzhou. Long queues are often lined up in front of Zhiweiguan, which sells a range of stewed products, such as duck, beef and tofu braised in soy sauce. These snacks usually serve as appetizers during the Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner.

Another must at any Hangzhou New Year meal is fried spring rolls. These rolls are wrapped in chunbing (spring pancake), a thin floury sheet sold oven-fresh at street vendors around the city.

Red lanterns are traditional ornaments in Spring Festival. They are hung on trees and streetlights to add an auspicious ambience to the city. Many shopping malls are also decorated with red hues and traditional festival elements to boost the merry atmosphere. And since people favor red apparel during the Lunar New Year season, many fashion brands have decorated their widows with red new arrivals.

The annual “spring rush” is underway at Hangzhou East Railway Station. According to reports, more than 100,000 passengers will travel across the country from this station. These days, the departure area is packed with passengers. People are recommended to arrive earlier in order to go through the security check.
