Sirens remember
SIRENS sounded across Hangzhou yesterday as the city marked the National Disaster Prevention and Reduction Day on May 12 - the day a massive earthquake killed nearly 70,000 people in Sichuan Province three years ago.
The wailing of sirens started at 10am. About 25,460 Hangzhou residents, including school students, took part in a disaster-prevention drill in eight districts at the same time.
Sirens are used to alert the public about an approaching typhoon, flood, major poisonous leak or other large-scale disasters.
