Sorting it out

HANGZHOU aims to achieve a 100 percent garbage sorting rate in its urban area this year under a new initiative, officials said this week.

Currently, 80 percent of residential districts have garbage sorting bins and every morning garbage trucks take away sorted garbage.

However, this scheme is unsuitable for the remaining 20 percent of neighborhoods. This is often because narrow streets restrict access to trucks equipped to carry away sorted rubbish.

Consequently, garbage from those places is removed by other vehicles which can negotiate narrow lanes, taken to transfer stations and then to landfill - without ever being sorted.

To tackle this, Hangzhou is to introduce garbage sorting machines at transfer stations so unsorted trash can be classified and then recycled or dumped accordingly.

"This a first in the country," said Cao Rongfu, the general manager of Hangzhou Environmental Group.

"The city aims that this year all urban areas will have garbage sorting equipment," added Cao.

Next month, a pilot project starts in Xihu and Xiacheng districts.
