Spacemen to launch exhibit

AN exhibition of China's Shenzhou VII manned space program - including the return capsule and three visiting taikonauts - is underway at the Zhejiang World Trade International Exhibition Center through January 19. The opening ceremony will be held on Friday, featuring the three taikonauts - Zhai Zhigang, Liu Boming and Jing Haipeng.

Shenzhou VII from September 25-28, 2008, was China's third manned space mission and involved the nation's first space walk.

Ticket booking is recommended.

The highlight is the return capsule, burned black from the heat of reentry. It stands in the plaza in front of the exhibition hall, beside a model of the Long March II launch rocket. Many other space mission items are exhibited as "national treasures," such as the gloves worn by commander Zhai on his space walk and the national flag that he waved.

The exhibition includes Zhai's China-developed space suit valued at 30 million yuan (US$4.4 million) and the parachute used to slow the capsule on descent, the world's biggest chute.

The exhibit also features interactive programs and devices. Visitors in an analog control center can push the button to begin the countdown to liftoff. They can also learn what it takes to be a taikonaut and whether they might qualify.

The national exhibit is making its ninth stop.
