Spending on seniors

HANGZHOU plans to invest more than 2 billion yuan (US$308 million) in the creation of 14 nursing homes for seniors by 2020.

The city is expected to have 1.8 million people over 60 by then, accounting for an estimated 24 percent of Hangzhou’s permanent residents, up from 20.8 percent now.

Currently, Hangzhou has 316 nursing homes, 2,329 day care centers and 1,198 canteens serving seniors. It has planned to add 200 day care centers with more than 10 beds each by the end of 2020. Public nursing homes will adopt an evaluation system with a transparent waiting list. Private nursing homes will provide more than 70 percent of their beds for the elderly. Hangzhou also plans to set up 10 nursing industry hubs and 10 nursing home chains, with an aim to create an estimated 80,000 jobs.
