Spring Festival gets animated

THE Animation Spring Festival Gala will be broadcast on television on Chinese New Year's Eve. It will be the first animation-themed gala produced by Hangzhou government for the Spring Festival.

The two-hour extravaganza includes singing, dancing, crosstalk, acrobatics and magic with the directors adding Chinese New Year themes into the cartoons.

HTV1 will have a live audience in the studio and prominent animation artists such as Tsai Chih Chung, Tony Wong, Hsiao Yen-Chung, Nie Jun, Yao Feila and Xia Da will be on hand to talk about their work. They will hand out Lunar New Year gifts for people in the audience.

Hangzhou government has listed the animation industry as a key sector to develop in its 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) for the economic growth. The International Animation and Cartoon Festival has been held annually in Hangzhou since 2005. Hangzhou is aiming to become the hub for animation industry in the country.

The show will be broadcast on HTV1 at 8pm on Sunday. During the Spring Festival, it will also be shown on China Central Television, Zhejiang TV and other channels in Hangzhou.
