Strokes of genius from the 'first formation'

A calligraphy exhibition boasting fresh pieces by 12 senior Zhejiang calligraphy artists is underway at Zhejiang Art Museum.

The calligraphers were invited to create pieces of famous poetry and articles about Zhejiang Province.

The Manner and Height Zhejiang Master Calligraphy Exhibition boasts more than 200 pieces by Liu Jiang, Shen Ding'an, Xiao Yunchun, Ma Shixiao, Zhang Zu'an, Lin Jiandan, Lu Lequn, Jin Jiancai, Luo Hengguang, Zhu Guantian, Yu Jianhua and Wang Donglin.

"They are all at least 65 years old and Zhejiang Province natives. Their reputations make them the 'first formation' among Zhejiang calligraphy artists," says Ma Fenghui, the curator as well as director of Zhejiang Art Museum.

In August, the 12 calligraphers were invited by the museum to create 10 to 15 calligraphy pieces. In less than four months, they all submitted their works.

As required, all pieces feature well-known poems or articles initiated from Zhejiang, including one masterpiece "Lan Ting Ji Xu," or "Preface to the Poems Composed at the Orchid Pavilion."

It is the most famous work of calligraphy by Wang Xizhi, China's sage of calligraphy, who composed this piece in 353 AD. The 12 contemporary artists each used their own styles to recreate "Lan Ting Ji Xu."

"The exhibition combines literature and calligraphy and is expected to reflect the prominence of Zhejiang in these areas," Ma says.

With the Year of the Dragon coming, all calligraphers were also asked to write the character long, meaning dragon.

Foreigners may find it interesting to observe how one Chinese character can look so different depending on the artist - one of Chinese calligraphy's obvious features.

The museum will permanently keep 10 pieces from each calligrapher.
