Subway line to open

HANGZHOU Metro Line 1 will begin service next month. Metro operators are now looking to hire 60 subway drivers.

Candidates for the job need to meet several requirements, which include limits in age, height, eyesight and education background.

After being enrolled, candidates will be sent to Wuhan Railway Driver School to improve their driving skills for one and a half years before they take up their post.

The drivers will each earn between 2,000 yuan (US$294) and 3,000 yuan per month.

Tree-planting base

Hangzhou plans to build several bases for precious plant specimens covering about 6,667 hectares of land in the next 10 years. Chinese nutmeg yew and hickory trees will be planted in the bases. Hickory trees are known for their hard wood.

In recent years, the demand for precious trees has increased, but supply was short due to over exploitation. Imports in this sector in Zhejiang Province have increased 14.7 percent annually.

To meet the high demand and reduce imports, the Hangzhou government made a detailed plan to plant more than 10 million precious trees. Government support will be provided.

The species of trees to be planted were carefully selected. Factors such as climate, soil, resources and development prospects were all taken into account.

Bicycle rentals

Yuhang District will offer 63 locations to rent bicycles by December. About 1,200 bicycles will be available for rent.

Most public places where bicycles are in high demand will be covered. Moreover, the average distance between a bicycle rental outlet and a community will be less than 100 meters.

The outlets have not been connected to those in downtown Hangzhou, which means bicycles rented in Yuhang have to be returned there.

Cycling day

The city has started an annual Hangzhou Cycling Day. It will be held every third Saturday of September.

This year 1,200 residents will gather for the first Hangzhou Cycling Day on September 18. They will cycle along the bank of the Qiantang River.

A Hangzhou Cycling Map will be published on September 18, recommending 13 cycling routes and other useful information about the city. The map will be available at 136 tourist information booths.

Auto exhibition

The 11th International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Hangzhou) will be held from October 12 to 17 this year at both Hangzhou International Conference and Exhibition Center and Hangzhou Xiaoshan Leisure Expo Exhibition Center.

The exhibition is now the biggest motor exhibition in Zhejiang Province and has been regarded as an A-level exhibition by some exhibitors.

This year's exhibition will be, for the first time, divided into two venues, each with different focus.

Motors exhibited in the International Conference and Exhibition Center are mainly American and European cars and luxury brands. Xiaoshan Leisure Expo Exhibition Center focuses on independent brands, commercial vehicles, automobile parts and new-energy automobiles.

Other innovations of the exhibition include its focus on new-energy automobiles and the addition of interactive events.
