Surfing the Qiantang tidal bore

EIGHT famous surfers including Robert "Wingnut" Weaver and Mary Osborne have been challenging the Qiantang River's tidal bore since Wednesday.

It's the third Qiantang River International Surfing Competition which ends today. It's also part of the weeklong 2011 Surfing China Carnival that takes place along a stretch of the Qiantang River from Xiaoshan District to Qianjiang New City.

The river features the world's largest tidal bore with waves that travel up to 40 kilometers per hour and up to 9 meters high.

Surfing in the Qiantang River is considered so risky that athletes were only given the green light in 2008 to surf a section of the river.

"Different from a sea tide where the waves come one after another, the river features only one tidal bore, which lasts for hours and is thus more demanding for athletes," said Cheng Ping, an official with the Hangzhou Sports Bureau.

The surfers will follow the tidal bore in motorboats ad take turns surfing. The competition is an exhibition game and is not determined by time.

The carnival also includes a Silver Dragon skateboarding contest, an extreme sports forum, a fashion show, and a beer and music festival.

It will end on Sunday.
