Surprisingly small lotus flowers make for pretty exhibition

Botanists have bred a lotus flower as small as a coin that grows in a tea cup.

The flower is the highlight of a lotus exhibition at Tiger Spring Park. The exhibit features 70 different species of lotus flowers growing in bowls, referred to as wanlian in Chinese. Each species’ flower, roots and leaves are small enough to fit in a bowl. Usually lotus flowers grow in ponds or large crock pots.

The smallest lotus grows in a tea cup, which is placed in a larger stone bowl of water. Thus the roots and blossom grow in the tea cup while the leaves extend to the water in the bowl.

It took five years to breed the flower, according to Huang Feiyan, deputy director of the Qiantang River Management Office of West Lake Scenic Area.

“We cultivated 25 flowers of this sort, but only this one survived,” she said, adding the flower needs watering 10 times a day and fertilization three times daily.

The biggest lotus at this exhibit is the size of a person’s palm. The flowers vary in color from pink and purple to white and yellow.

The exhibition runs until July 20. Visitors are invited to taste lotus tea, and there is a musical performance at 10am daily until the exhibit ends.

The park is famous for its spring water, which is regarded as among the finest in China.
