'Swan Lake' to 'High Heels' pop
THE Hangzhou stage heats up this summer with performances by a Moscow ballet company, a French orchestra, an American nostalgia singer and a Taiwan songstress. Nie Xin knows the score.
With World Expo attracting musicians and artists from around the world to show off their talents in Shanghai, neighboring tourist magnet Hangzhou is also looking forward to a hot performance season this summer.
Moscow ballet
The Moscow National Model Ballet will stage Tchaikovsky's classic "Swan Lake" on Tuesday at the Hangzhou Theater.
"Swan Lake" has been presented in many different versions over the years since it premiered in 1877 in Moscow as "Lake of Swans," performed by the Bolshoi Theater. The world-famous ballet in all its incarnations is probably the most popular ballet staged in China.
The Moscow National Model Ballet is one of nine model ballet companiesin Russia. The story is based on Russian fairy tales and German legend.
Nostalgia
On the next day, the American singer-songwriter Bertie Higgins will perform nostalgia songs such as "Casablanca," "Key Largo" and "Miami Moon" also at the Hangzhou Theater. He performed earlier in Shanghai at the Oriental Art Center.
It's the China debut for the 65-year-old musician who also wrote "Just Another Day in Paradise," "A Wonderful Waste of Time" and "Caroling Blue." Higgins will sing all of them again in the Hangzhou concert.
He did not write the famous song from the famous film "Casablanca." That song, "As Time Goes By" was written in 1931 by Herman Hupfeld. It became most famous when it was reintroduced in the 1942 movie and sung by Dooley Wilson.
Higgins' "Casablanca" about kids falling in love while watching the movie at a drive-in theater, became the Song of the Year in all of the Pacific Rim, and when the CD reached double platinum status, Higgins became an international recording star overnight.
French music
The Lille National Orchestra will play at the Hangzhou Grand Theater on July 11.
Conducted by the music director Jean-Claude Casadesus, the concert will feature Milhaud's "Darius Le Boeuf Sur Le Toit," Ravel's "Piano Concerto in G Major" and Beethoven's "Symphony No. 6 in F Major (Pastoral)."
Founded in 1976 with government support, the Lille National Orchestra (Orchestre National de Lille) undertakes an ambitious artistic program aimed at the widest possible audience. It performs a symphonic repertoire, giving prominence to contemporary work and promoting young talent, cultural activities and educational projects.
The orchestra has established itself as one of the leading orchestras in France, and is regularly featured in broadcasts on radio and television.
Shanghai-born pianist Xu Zhong will collaborate with the orchestra in the upcoming concert.
Xu has conducted the Paris Symphony Orchestra, Lille National Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Orchestra Dortmund, and cooperated with well-known artists such as Paul Badura Skoda, Dominique Merlet, John O'Conor.
Taiwan pop
On July 24, Taiwan pop singer Rene Liu will give a solo concert at Huanglong Stadium, as part of her China tour, "Put On Your High-Heeled Shoes." She started in Shanghai.
