Tasty fare on a busy thoroughfare
WHILE a popular scenic area may be dotted with restaurants, they needn't detract from a visitor's experience - so long as they are in keeping with their surroundings and, of course, offer good food and service.
Nanshan Road along Hangzhou's West Lake is such a place. As a main road surrounding the renowned scenic area, heavy traffic passes along every day, yet it remains a great place to take a walk or sit for a cup of coffee beneath the phoenix trees outside the restaurants and bars.
Due to the location, scenery and bustling atmosphere, Nanshan Road has long been one of the must-see places in Hangzhou. Year after year, new restaurants, cafes and bars open, while others close. However, a number survive and thrive, becoming landmarks on the road in their own right.
Shanghai Daily introduces three "old" restaurants on Nanshan Road, which have established a citywide reputation.
Linglong Town Restaurant
Linglong Town is a stylish restaurant that has been a fixture on Nanshan Road for years.
It is a Taiwan cuisine restaurant and its decor is in keeping with simple Taiwan style, with unadorned white brick walls decorated with bird cages and paintings.
Booths are separated by walls with holes cut away. In accordance with oriental aesthetics, diners can see their neighbors, yet their space is still separate.
Taiwan classic dish three-cup chicken ?a chicken braised with three cups of sauces ?a is a specialty in the restaurant. A reddish color, it features tender chicken meat and mellow soy sauce.
Crab roe braised with tofu is another signature dish, combining the umami of crab meat and crab roe with tender tofu and thick soup.
For people who like sour-and-sweet food, fried dough stick stuffed with shrimp and pineapple is not to be missed. The pineapple and salad dressing counteract the greasiness of the fried dough stick, while the delicacy of shrimp adds flavor to the plain dough.
Address: 198 Nanshan Rd
Tel: (0571) 8702-5558
Recommended dishes: three-cup chicken, crab roe tofu, fried dough stick stuffed with shrimp and pineapple
West Lake Spring Restaurant
West Lake Spring is a Cantonese restaurant which enjoys a convenient location, adjoining - as the name suggests - West Lake, close to Xihu Tiandi and opposite to the China Academy of Art.
With its black-and-green facade, the restaurant is a low-profile building blending in with its surroundings, while its interior design features atmospheric lighting, black-and-green decor and red lanterns above each table.
West Lake Spring covers 1,600 square meters and boasts eight individually styled boxes, as well as a hall which can hold 200 people.
One reason such a large restaurant thrives at the lakeside is that it attracts locals by offering authentic Cantonese cuisine. Popular dishes include classics such as roast squab, chicken feet braised with black pepper, porridge, chee cheong fun (steamed rice noodle rolls) and shrimp dumplings.
But West Lake Spring gains much of its reputation from its desserts, especially crispy durian cake, mango pudding and papaya pudding.
Address: 101-17 Nanshan Rd
Tel: (0571) 8703-5551, (0571) 8708-5551
Recommended dishes: crispy durian cake, mango pudding, shrimp dumplings, chee cheong fun and ham stewed within papaya
Yee Chino Restaurant
Although Yee Chino has only been on Nanshan Road for a couple of years, it can be called an established eatery as it's been in Hangzhou for a decade.
Many passersby fail to notice that it is a restaurant - some take it for a gallery or a museum because its sign is overshadowed by two deer-like statues in front of the white building with a rough-textured facade.
And in some ways it is a gallery displaying the owner's taste.
All the chairs and tables were custom made in France, while the floor tiles were designed by the owner himself, each one unique.
Yee Chino separates its private dining areas with imported heavy curtains that feature handmade beads from different countries. Booths have different decor styles, including baroque and Japanese.
The menu offers Hangzhou, Western and fusion food, with prices higher than average.
The dishes are as delicate as the decor.
For example "fruit tree," pieces of fresh fruit cubes stuck into a tree-shaped stand, is served with dry ice.
A specialty eggplant dish includes abalone, crab meat, fish meat and vegetables. The goose liver is also highly recommended.
Address: 1 Luyang Rd (opposite the China Academy of Art)Tel: (0571) 8707-0777
Recommended dishes: specialty eggplant, bobo chicken, crab roe tofu, cuttlefish noodles, chicken braised with abalone
