Texts net 27m yuan

Almost all the manuscripts written by 240 important figures of the past 200 years were sold on Sunday in an auction held by Xiling Seal Society, one of China’s most prestigious arts academies, fetching a total of 27.46 million yuan (US$4.5 million).

A letter written by Charles Dickens was sold for 264,500 yuan, the highest price at the auction. A letter by JRR Tolkien fetched 172,500 yuan — it mentioned “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” two of his most important novels.

The manuscripts also included works by Thomas Hardy, Arthur Conan Doyle, Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Albert Einstein, Rabindranath Tagore, Romain Rolland, Alice Munro, Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt.
