The End ... for now

AFTER 73 years, West Lake Cinema on Dongpo Road will bid a temporary farewell to cinema-goers on Monday. The old theater will be dismantled and rebuilt with modern facilities over the next two years.

The cinema will show its last movie on Monday night, with 50 local people invited to share its last moment.

Built in January 1939 by the Japanese, the West Lake Cinema has been renovated at least four times. The biggest overhaul took place in 1978 when the city government expanded its premises to 1,500 square meters and increased the number of seats to 1,452.

The three-floor cinema used to be one of the most popular venues for Hangzhou residents, especially young people and lovers. During the 1990s, it ranked the third in box office revenue among all cinemas in China for three years in a row.

However, the West Lake Cinema lost out to competition from new movie theaters with advanced equipment, and was forced to cut ticket prices to attract customers.
