The perfect season for the perfect afternoon tea

SOOTHE your body in the spring sunshine and a warm breeze. Refresh mind and soul in the greenery and nature, and satisfy the appetite with tea and desserts at afternoon tea.

Picturesque Hangzhou blossoms in spring — the best season to tour the scenic city. Star-rated hotels are busy promoting their updated afternoon tea menus.

Shanghai Daily shares offerings from some local hotels, some of which serve specialty Longjing green tea and incorporate it in their desserts.

Most have outdoor dining areas to make the most of nature in this season.

Oakwood Residence Hangzhou

Return to a time where there was always time for tea and enjoy a long afternoon with best friends. On a fine spring day, retreat from busy life, take a break with an afternoon tea set at Oakleaf Restaurant of Oakwood Residence Hangzhou.

This set features a delightful selection of sweets and savories presented on elegant china with a spring vibe.

There are homemade mini scones, macaroons, brownies, vanilla mousse, mozzarella and tomato, Parma ham and avocado tarts, smoked salmon rolls, creme brulee, panna cotta and loose leaf Twinings teas or a selection of robust coffees.

Oakleaf Restaurant serves its afternoon tea set daily from 2-4:30pm, 148 yuan (US$21) plus a 15 percent service charge for two.

JW Marriott Hotel Hangzhou

Savor a taste of Longjing tea, indulge in a range of delicious cakes and pastries with the new afternoon tea menu in the Lobby Lounge of the JW Marriott Hotel Hangzhou.

Longjing-themed desserts include Longjing and red bean tiramisu, Longjing cheese tartlet, Longjing cream brulee and Longjing mousse.

The afternoon tea is served at 228 yuan for two, plus a 15 percent service charge.

Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale Hangzhou

Wyndham’s 10th floor terrace is known for its view of West Lake and the Baochu Pagoda. And the hotel is offering its new afternoon tea set menu, which includes delicate cold appetizers, Western desserts, Chinese snacks, coffee, tea and more.

The set meal costs only 198 yuan a person, plus a 15 percent service charge. Come to simply relax with your friends or turn a business meeting into a memorable event, taking full advantage of the season’s finest weather.

The spring menu is available until May 30.

Diaoyutai Hotel Hangzhou

In the hometown of the renowned Longjing green tea, the Diaoyutai Hotel Hangzhou blends the classic brew into special desserts.

Longjing tiramisu is one example, combing the cream’s smoothness, the alcohol’s mellowness, the tea powder’s bitterness and chocolate’s richness.

And the classical Cantonese dessert ginger milk curd at Diaoyutai is served with the traditional spring snack qingtuan (green rice balls), made of mugwort juice, glutinous rice and sweetened bean paste. And there’s more: green macaron, green apple mousse cup, chocolate mango mousse and green tea flavor scone. A pot of Longjing tea is the perfect match. Twenty outdoor seats close to a park are available, where the scent of grass and trees serve as a backdrop. The price is 112 yuan for one, subject to a 16 percent surcharge.
