The power of love

A flower show with “The Butterfly Lovers” as its theme started on Wednesday at the Wansong Academy. It will run until May 3.

Floral designers will teach visitors the art of flower arrangement in the academy, which is near Phoenix Hill, on April 26. A match-making party will be held there every Saturday during the flower show.

Wansong Academy is now a public park but it was the school where Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, known as China’s Romeo and Juliet, met and fell in love with each other many centuries ago.

The couple’s tragic love story was turned into a play called “The Butterfly Lovers.”

The play traces the romance between Liang and Zhu. A heartbroken Liang languished and died after learning Zhu’s parents had arranged for her to marry a wealthy man. A mysterious whirlwind disrupted Zhu’s wedding procession and led her to Liang’s grave, where they turned into a pair of butterflies.

Nowadays young lovers are still drawn to the academy because of Liang and Zhu’s story, along with its beautiful scenery.
