There's something fishy going on
XIAOSHAN District in Hangzhou is famous for its fishing. Xu Wenwen casts her line and uncovers that the best places for anglers offer a lot more than just fish.
It's a great time for fishing in Hangzhou as fish generally like to fatten up before winter. And Xiaoshan District is arguably the best place for anglers in the area.
The district boasts three water systems belonging to the Qiantang River. Fish in Xiaoshan's lakes and rivers mainly include carp, grass carp, silver carp and snake-head fish. There are also turtles and crabs.
The fishing places in Xiaoshan are all in rural areas with most of them in nongzhuang, which literally means farm. This area is popular as there are farms where you can pick your own fruits and vegetables. There are also some good local restaurants and places that provide simple accommodation.
Among all the waters in Xiaoshan, Xiang Lake is the most famous. It measures 8 square kilometers and is known as the sister lake of West Lake because of its beautiful scenery.
The lake has a long history as an 8,000-year-old canoe was unearthed in the area in 2002. Archeologists then found large quantities of stoneware, potteries and utensils made of animal bones or horns.
Shanghai Daily takes a tour around the fishing resorts.
Leisurely fishing
Xiaoshan Xiang Lake Leisure Fishing Center at Xiang Lake Farm is one of the most popular places to fish in the district with some 50,000 anglers coming every year.
It features a fishing area in which fish, turtles, crabs and shrimp are raised. The pond boasts many Chinese soft-shelled turtles.
In China, Chinese soft-shelled turtles are often eaten fried, steamed, or in a soup. Turtle meat is considered to nourish the yin ("cold" energy), according to traditional Chinese medicine. It also suppresses hyperactivity and can calm the liver to relieve convulsions. Turtle dishes are often served to people who have just had surgery.
The farm also raises rare birds and crocodiles. The local restaurant serves crocodile dishes.
