Thousands of years of history in these tales from the riverbank

THE small county of Jiande can boast a myriad of tourist attractions, from an ancient Buddhist statue to a reservoir. Ren Yuan reports.

On the way from Hangzhou to Qiandao Lake, you will pass a small county called Jiande. Xin'an River, a?tributary of Qiantang River, runs through the county and the attractions of Jiande County are situated near its banks.

Jiande has a long history, with the "Jiande People," according to archeologists, originating 50,000 years ago.

Jiande has officially been selected as one of the first batch of 44 key national tourist attractions. It is known for its beautiful mountains and rivers. In 2001, it was named as one of China's "model tourist cities."

"Ten Scenic Spots around Xin'an River" is Jiande's biggest attraction. On the east, there is Fuchu River in Qililong District. On the south, Linxi Cave and Daci Yan. On the north is Xin'anjiang Reservoir and Qiandao Lake.

Here are five hightlights.

Daci Yan

Famous for its abbey, valley and streams, as well as the largest sculpture of a standing Buddha in the country, Daci Yan represents the combination of nature and Buddhism.

The ancient Daci Abbey is?built on the cliff of?Yiquan, one of the summits of Daci Mountain. Some 586 meters above ground, the abbey, with its halls, temples, railings and galleries, is half?embedded in the rock and?half protruding into the air.

Part of the cliff forms the standing Buddha, which is 147 meters high and quite spectacular.

By car from Hangzhou take the 320 National Road to Jiande's Shouchang Town then the 330 National Road for about 15 minutes.

Qinren Valley (Lovers' Valley)

Inside the valley, a waterfall more than 30 meters high rushes down the mountain and forms a deep pool at the foot.

The rocks and cliffs beside the waterfall are covered with green moss. The waterfall has become known as the "first green waterfall in southeastern China."

Ticket: 40 yuan

By bus from Hangzhou East Bus Station or Hangzhou West Bus Station to Xin'anjiang Town.

By car From Hangzhou take the 320 National Road to Jiande's Xin'anjiang Town then the 330 National Road for about 15 minutes.

Linxi Cave

An underground river and rock formations are Linxi's peculiarities. You can take a boat and visit the cave. Outside the cave the mountain scenery is also very appealing.

Ticket: 40 Yuan

By car from Hangzhou take the 320 National Road to Jiande's Hangtou Town and turn left.

Meichen Old Town

More than 1,700 years old, Meichen Town is the center of the ancient Mi County. Two lakes sit on the east and the west sides of the town and two temples on the north and south sides.

For historical sites, you can visit Sifan Hall, Liuhe Well and Mingguiqin River. Outside the town, you can find places mentioned in classic tales of the "Water Margin" and "Strange Tales of Liaozhai" such as Yuquan Monastery, Wulong Hill, Wang Pinewood and the Double Temples.

By car from Hangzhou take the 320 National Road to Jiande's Meichen Town.

Xin'anjiang Reservoir

Situated 6 kilometers west of Jiande, the reservoir was built in 1957. The dam is over 105 meters high and 465 meters long.
