Threats to Xixi Wetlands

CRAYFISH, red-eared slider, mosquitofish, water snails and stray cats are among the most unwelcome animals in the Xixi Wetlands, according to a biodiversity report by the Zhejiang Natural Museum.

Biologists from the museum found them thriving in the wetlands, which are fed by brackish water from the Qiangtang River. The crayfish are scavengers but they also do harm to crops and dikes.

Mosquitofish eat zooplankton, small insects and insect larvae, which are food for other fish and frogs. This foreign species poses a threat to some native animals.

The population of stray cats, attracted by scraps from restaurants in the park, has grown rapidly in recent years. They prey on young birds in nests.

The biologists conducted the biodiversity survey in nine observation spots around the Xixi Wetlands, including the Lotus Pool, the Hangzhou Botanic Garden, Zhoujia Village and Yanshui Fishing Village.
