Three ball games
RESIDENTS will compete in "three small ball" games - tennis, table tennis and badminton - on the National Fitness Day on Sunday.
Qualifications will be held in the morning with finals in the afternoon on China's second national day to encourage people to exercise and keep fit.
In morning rounds, contestants can select one game, but in the finals, he or she must play all three.
The winner will be honored as "Three Ball Commander-in Chief" and receive 5,000 yuan (US$738) in cash. Second- and third-place winners will also receive cash prizes.
Foreign talent
Hangzhou is seeking to attract foreign creative talent and invites overseas professionals to a conference in November to learn about preferential policies and subsidies.
The Second Conference on International Exchange of Qualified Personnel will be held on November 2-4 to attract more overseas professionals to make Hangzhou their career base.
The city government hopes to use policies and financial incentives to attract 20 teams of at least 100 creative professionals within five years.
It plans to significantly subsidize these innovative undertakings.
The conference is open to overseas personnel with a master's degree or at least three years of specialized work experience. It's also open to representatives of innovative overseas undertakings and influential overseas education organizations.
Those interested in participating can fill out an application at www.hzzjlx.com or www.zjhwrc.com before September 30.
Heritage status
China has announced it will submit Hangzhou's West Lake for consideration as a UNESCO world heritage site next year.
The announcement was made by Tong Mingkang, deputy director of the State Bureau of Cultural Relics, at the 34th World Heritage Conference in Brazil.
The basic requirement is that a site should be authentic and complete. The Hangzhou government has only made slight adjustments in recent years and has preserved the natural appearance of the West Lake.
Results will be declared in June 2011 at the 35th World Heritage Conference in Paris, after 21 UNESCO heritage member countries vote.
Health boost
A COMMUNITY health campaign of lectures and exercise will soon get underway in an effort to make Hangzhou a healthier city.
The activities called "Send Health to Communities" will run from August 21 to January 1, 2011. The program features 500 health talks and 500 exercise activities in various districts.
Residents will learn about preventing hypertension, heart disease, diabetes and other ailments, as well as eating healthy food and exercising.
Health talks will be held once a week on Saturday morning, starting August 21 in designated communities. The first subdistricts are Zhanongkou, Zhaohui, Tianshu, West Lake, Hemu, Lingyin, Beishan, Xiaoying, Xiasha and Chengxiang.
Exercise activities will be held every Sunday beginning on August 22. Professional coaches will teach tai chi every Sunday morning. The first classes will be held in the following communities: Zhanongkou, Yanan New Community, Shijia Bridge, Qixialing Community and Hemu.
More tourists
Hangzhou's tourism in the first half of the year was the highest in three years, primarily because of the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, said Vice Mayor Zhang Jianting, who cited statistics.
Hangzhou received 1.2 million international tourists, 15.8 percent more than last year, and 28.4 million domestic tourists, 15.1 percent more than the same period of last year.
Total tourism income reached US$809 million for international visitors and 39.6 billion yuan (US$5.82 billion) for domestic tourists.
Since May 1 when the World Expo opened, Hangzhou has received altogether 9.5 million tourists, far more than last year.
Faster train
A TWO-HOUR rail journey from Hefei, Anhui Province, to Hangzhou can be expected in four years.
Construction of the Huanghang Railway has recently been authorized by the National Development and Reform Commission. Construction will begin this year.
The completed line will shorten the journey between Yellow Mountain in Anhui and Hangzhou to one hour.
The railway is expected to be developed into a top international tourism route, boosting economic development in all towns and cities along the way.
Clean up
Removing unsightly advertising signs and billboards and standardizing other signs are the next part of the city's clean-up and beautification campaign.
Nine hundred smaller streets have been targeted by the Hangzhou Urban Management Office, which already cleaned up many major roads. Signs on roofs in greenbelts and open places will also be removed through September 30.
Last year the city removed 10,866 unsightly advertising signs and standardized 1,639 to create a uniform look along streets.
