Top Russian paintings on exhibit
CHINESE oil painting pioneer Quan Shanshi has accomplished a coup of sorts by organizing an exhibition of 56 top-level artworks from the State Tretyakov Gallery of Russia in Hangzhou.
Quan, 84, went to Russia in 2013 and expressed his desire to show modern Russian art in China. It took two years to arrange, but the paintings are now on display at the Quan Shanshi Art Center.
Six Russian art restorers and the director of the State Tretyakov Gallery of Russia, Irina Lebedeva, have also made the trip to Hangzhou in a sign of how important these works are.
Quan was selected to study art in the former Soviet Union when he was young. He and other young Chinese also sent to Russia later became renowned oil painters and art educators. They have since worked to promote the development of oil paintings in China.
“Russian oil paintings are a mirror to Chinese oil paintings, but they went one step earlier than China,” Quan says.
He has selected paintings that he believes will inspire Chinese modern art.
“Chinese people have had stereotypical views of Russian art for a long time, but I want to tell them there is much more to the story,” Quan says.
For instance, “Memories. Widows” by Victor Popkov in 1966 depicts sad widows who lost their husbands; “Great Coat of Father” is about a young man trying on his father’s coat.
Evsey Moiseenko’s “May 9” illustrates how people on Victory Day, which marks Russia’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II, looked bored rather than happy. All works were created from 1894 through the 1980s.
Lebedeva says the 56 works are catalogued into several groups including works of the last three decades of the 19th century, avant-garde works created from 1910 to 1930, and works created from 1960 to 1980.
Some works are being displayed in China for the first time like “Heralds” by Moiseenko, one of the country’s most influential 20th century painters. He often focused on war themes. “Spanish Triptych — A Bullfight in Madrid” by Andrey Melnikov is another piece making its China debut.
The exhibition runs until May 8 and then will move to Shanghai.
