Top picture award

PHOTOGRAPHER Chen Zhongqiu, who works for the Metropolitan Express newspaper in Hangzhou, has won a 2012 Best Picture award from National Geographic.

The photograph, titled "Emergency Rescue," was one of 12 pictures recognized by the US-based magazine.

Taken in June last year, it shows rescuers saving a construction worker who had six steel bars impaled in his body after a machine malfunctioned at a construction site in Fujian Province. The worker, surnamed Zheng, was taken to a hospital in Hangzhou by fellow workers, firefighters and doctors.

Zheng, a married man with two daughters, suffered serious injuries in the accident. His family now faces a huge financial burden as he was the sole breadwinner.

The Metropolitan Express called on its readers to donate money to help the family.
