Top web shoppers

HANGZHOU consumers each spent an average of more than 38,000 yuan (US$6,000) on online shopping last year, according to Alipay, the online payment subsidiary of Alibaba Group.

The figure is second only to Taiwan's Chiayi City and the highest among cities on Chinese mainland. Kaohsiung in Taiwan was third and Shanghai fourth highest.

People born in the 1980s make up the largest group of online shoppers, accounting for half of all online spending.

However, shoppers born in the 1960s each spent 31,000 yuan on average, compared with 19,000 yuan and 14,000 yuan for those born in the 1970s and 1980s respectively.
