Tourism coupons

HANGZHOU will issue more of its popular tourism coupons during World Expo 2010, the city tourism commission has announced.

The new batch of coupons will have a total value of 40 million yuan (US$5.8 million) and will be delivered in sets. The value of each set will be 400 yuan and cover 29 Hangzhou tourism attractions, such as Xixi Wetlands and West Lake.

Tourists can use the coupons when buying admission tickets to those attractions with the greatest discount reaching 50 percent.

Most of the coupons will be handed out for free at Hangzhou's Expo pavilion. Tourists can get them by showing their Expo admission ticket. All the coupons are for use from May 1 to November 30.

"About 70 million foreign and domestic tourists are expected to visit Shanghai during Expo, and 70 percent of them may travel to places around Shanghai," says Wang Xinzhang, vice director of the Hangzhou Tourism Commission. "We hope to attract about 7 million Expo tourists to visit Hangzhou, and the coupons will help us."

New hospitals

A GRAND comprehensive hospital will be built in Hangzhou's Chengbei District by local government. It will have 500 sickbeds, mostly catering for old-age patients.

It will be the biggest facility of its kind in the city.

According to official statistics, the level of Hangzhou's aging population has already reached 16.9 percent in 2010, and in some districts such as Shangcheng and Gongshu the number is much higher. As the demand is increasing, the service needs have to keep up.

As well as the Chengbei facility, there will be another small one built in Xiacheng District. It will have 99 sickbeds and the construction will start this year.

Smoking move

WEDDING cigarettes have been a Chinese custom at marriage ceremonies for generations. But recently in Hangzhou, some hotels and restaurants are hoping that it can be changed.

Sixteen catering businesses proposed the concept of "non-smoking weddings" on April 12, suggesting that wedding hosts and guests not smoke during the wedding ceremony to establish a healthy environment for all attendees.

In addition, the proposal also suggests that restaurant staff try to persuade guests to refrain from smoking.

CPI level falls

THE State Statistics Bureau reports that the CPI (consumption price index) of Hangzhou dropped by 0.1 percent in March compared with February, but it was 2.7 percent higher than the same month of 2009. For the entire first quarter, the CPI was 2.7 percent higher than the same period last year.

Food prices fell during the month, mainly because of the fall in consumption in the post-festival period.

Hangzhou food prices decreased by 0.7 percent in March, but were still 5.4 percent higher than the same month of last year.

Ceremony girls

THE final selection of Miss Etiquette for the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai took place in Xiaoshan Amusement Park on April 11.

Zhai Wei, sophomore student from Hebei University, became the champion. Three hundred contestants were involved in the final.

The successful contestants will consist of a ceremonial service team at Expo Shanghai. In addition, 60 winners from the 300 will be the special ceremonial girls of Expo who will work as guides or interpreters for senior foreign officials.
