Tourism deal

The signing ceremony of a strategic cooperation document between the World Tourism Alliance and the government of Zhejiang Province was held at the National Tourism Administration in Beijing on Sunday, announcing the headquarters of World Tourism Alliance to be established at Xianghu National Resort in Xiaoshan District.

The alliance is a non-government, non-profit international tourism organization set up by the China Tourism Association at the 22nd Congress of the World Tourism Organization on September 11. The original members of the WTA come from 29 countries and regions, with more than 60 percent of them from overseas.

Five cities, including Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Xi’an and Chengdu, were considered candidates for the headquarters, and Hangzhou was finally chosen thanks to its tourism service levels and policy support from local government, according to Liu Shijun, secretary general of WTA.

To date, Hangzhou has received around 160 million visitors this year, with more than 4 million from overseas. The tourism sector is expected to generate an income of 300 billion yuan (US$46 billion) for the city.
