Tourism, resorts and creative industries magnet planned

A city hub for vacation resorts and the creative industry is taking shape in the Zhijiang area along the Qiantang River near the West Lake scenic area.

In a year or two, the city's western area, which already features many attractions, will take on a new look. The 156-square-kilometer area is eight times the size of the downtown Shangcheng District.

Tea production and vacation destinations include Longwu, Zhuantang, Lingshan and Shuangpu towns.

Zhijiang is known for its Song Dynasty Theme Park, West Lake Golf Club and various resort hotels.

By the end of 2015, the area is to be turned into a leisure resort and creative industries hub as well as a showcase of environmental protection.

Jindu Polar Ocean Park

The 1.93-hectare park project in southern Zhijiang area started in 2009. It's 20 minutes' drive from downtown Hangzhou and 10 minutes' ride from the West Lake scenic area.

The first phase of the park will begin trial operations late this year.

It features an aquarium and marine animal show. The second phase of construction includes an experience center for children and a resort. Construction is expected to begin in October; completion is expected in 2012.

Sheraton Zhijiang Resort

Five-star Sheraton Zhijiang Resort will start trial operations in November, according to Qianjiang Evening News. The 12.87-hectare resort is south of Wuyun Mountain and east of Yangming Valley.

The 500-million-yuan (US$76.5 million) investment features two presidential suites, as well as deluxe suites and other junior suites, all offering views of mountains and water. It will have a gym, a fishing pond and a "tropical rain forest" theme park.

Hangzhou International Finance Conference and Exhibition Center

A large high-end exhibition complex will emerge in Zhijiang area by the end of 2015 and it is envisioned to be a leading financial services hub focused on Hangzhou and nearby areas.

Construction is expected to begin in December.

Chinese and overseas financial and insurance institutions are expected to settle there.

French architect Dominique Perrault is inspired by neo-classical style.

The entire 854,000-square-meter complex includes a 200,000-square-meter financial center, a 300,000-square-meter commercial center and a 150,000-square-meter exhibition center. It will have 4,600 parking places.

Longwu Old Town

In addition to showcasing tea rituals and its plantation that dates back several hundred years, Longwu Village plans a Longwu tourism complex.

The 3-square-kilometer development with old time charm will be centered on Longwu Old Town and feature the traditional lifestyle of a watertown in southeast China. The old houses in the town will be preserved and renovated. A theater stage will be built over a creek and a dock, a port, a commercial street and tea houses will be scattered along the riverside. The town offers "happy farmer" tourism, enabling urban dwellers to stroll in the fresh air and even do some farm work.

Waiwutong Art Village

Waiwutong Art Village project, which started last June, is expected to be one of the most active domestic art exchange and sales centers. By the end of this year, farmhouses will be renovated into studios for international artists. The village will be a platform of creativity, exhibition, communication and business.

Phoenix CreativeInternational Park

The former Shuangliu Cement Plant of the 1970s has been turned into a creative loft zone, Phoenix Creative International Park, which has attracted many artists, enterprises and visitors. They include famous Taiwanese cartoonist Tsai Chih-Chung and Japanese designer Kijyo Rokkaku. who have studios there.

The park's next construction phase will begin next year and cover 25,000 square meters. It will be focused on business incubation, animation production and electronic arts. The phoenix park is a key part of the city's ambitious program to make Hangzhou a center of the creativity industry in China.

Haoyuan International Plaza

In 2014, Zhuantang Town in Zhijiang area will be the site of a commercial complex that includes offices, shopping malls, restaurants and cinemas. Construction will soon begin on the 218,4000-square-meter development. It will contain an underground supermarket, multi-storied shopping malls, boutiques and high-rise office buildings - representing the local central business district.
