Traffic deaths down
A TOTAL of 2,036 people were killed and 8,080 injured in 7,888 traffic accidents in the first half of this year in Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang Transport Management Bureau said this week.
The number of accidents was down almost 7 percent on the same period last year, while the death toll was more than 9 percent lower.
In the first six months of this year, 52,662 drivers were found drunk driving in incidents that led to the deaths of 45 people.
Other figures found that 51 of deaths in accidents were caused by vehicles being overloaded, and 33 fatalities were caused by driver fatigue - both numbers down on the same period last year.
However, the figures also found that 125 people died in 377 accidents involving coaches. This number of fatalities represents a 42 percent increase on the same period last year. Officials attributed this to violations of traffic rules.
Accidents involving mopeds and scooters claimed 397 lives in the first six months of the year. Figures showed that accidents involving mopeds and scooters accounted for 30 percent of all traffic accidents in the first six months of 2012.
