Traffic poll begins

HANGZHOU has begun soliciting public opinion over limiting traffic downtown.

Traffic police and the city's civil affairs bureau are running a poll on their plan to restrict some vehicles during certain periods every day to relieve peak-time congestion.

Vehicles with odd- and even-numbered car plates would be allowed on the road on alternate weekdays from 7am to 8:30am and from 5pm to 6:30pm in designated streets. Vehicles with out-of-town car plates would be banned during peak hours in those areas.

Coaches, buses and taxis would be exempt.

Traffic officials said the number of motor vehicles in the downtown area had reached 746,100 by the end of May while the number of electric motor cars had surged to more than 1.23 million.

Residents can go to www.hzrb.cn to take part in the poll.
