Trash regulations
Under new trash management regulations which go into effect on Tuesday, individuals who don’t properly sort and dispose of household garbage could be fined up to 200 yuan (US$31), according to an announcement from the Hangzhou Urban Management Commission. Also in accordance with these new laws, trash-related infractions will be recorded in violators’ personal credit rating.
The rules lay out penalties for those who improperly dump construction waste, allowing for maximum fines of up to 2,000 yuan for individual offenders and 50,000 yuan for companies.
Meanwhile, hotels in the city will no longer provide disposable toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo bottles, combs or slippers starting in December.
Looking further ahead, authorities in Hangzhou also plan to provide local residents with rubbish bags labeled with QR codes. These codes will allow local authorities and neighborhood committees to trace individual bags back to their owners.
The Tianziling Landfill now collects 93 percent of garbage generated in the city, averaging 4,713 tons a day, far exceeding the design capacity of 2,671 tons.
