Tree protection

LARGE trees around tea gardens in Hangzhou have been numbered and photographed as part of a campaign to preserve them from damage by tea planters.

Planters found guilty of damaging the trees in any way will be fined, and those who cause trees to die will be severely punished, said Bao Tinghua, deputy director of the Hangzhou Gardening and Cultural Relics Administration Bureau.

Some tea planters have been caught felling the trees, or trying to kill them with pesticides or through removing bark in order to clear ground for more tea planting.

Hangzhou is famous for its Longjing tea, one of the most famous varieties in China.

Hangzhou tea planters harvest about 7,500 kilograms of tea from 20 hectares every year, generating about 45 million yuan (US$6 million) in revenue.

The bureau has also set up GPS and surveillance cameras at key protection areas in order to identify and track down anyone damaging the city's trees.
