Tunnel expansion

The expansion of Xinling Tunnel will be completed later this year, the contractor said recently. At a cost of 1.17 billion yuan (US$192 million), the 13.6-kilometer tunnel connects Xiaoshan and the neighboring city of Zhuji. It will have a speed limit of 120kph after the expansion. The tunnel has two tubes. One is ready for opening and the other is being paved. It is expected to open in October. The tunnel will have 10 lanes, five in each direction, compared with eight before expansion. Described as the “most congested tunnel in Zhejiang,” Xinling Tunnel is a bottleneck on the Hangzhou-Quzhou Highway. During public holidays, cars line up for miles to enter the tunnel.
