Tunnel joins up
THE first tunnel under the Qiantang River - the Qingchun Road Tunnel - was recently successfully joined up and is expected to open to traffic late this year when it will take just six minutes to drive from Hangzhou city center to Xiaoshan District.
The tunnel is 3,765 meters long and the designed speed is 60kph. It connects Qiantang New City and the Qianjiang Century City of Xiaoshan. After the construction is completed, there will be four lanes in total.
Railway on track
THE construction of Hangzhou-Changsha Passenger Railway will begin in mid-April, according to Hukun Railway Passenger Traffic Co Ltd.
The railway is the east section of the Shanghai-Kunming line and runs from Hangzhou to Changsha in Hunan Province, passing through Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces. It will be 295.185 kilometers long, and the designed speed is about 350kph. It's expected to open to traffic on July 1, 2013.
Metro sees red
HANGZHOU Metro Line 1 will have red as its theme color, said the Hangzhou Metro Group recently. With red symbolizing good fortune, celebration and passion, Hangzhou hopes its urban Metro line will be a total success. At the same time, the designs of the Metro Line 1 trains have been made public. Citizens may vote at the Hangzhou City Construction Exhibition Pavilion (on Yan'an Road and Qingchun Road), or offer their advice on http://hwyst.hangzhou.com.cn until tomorrow.
Haibaos say hello
TWO giant Haibaos, the World Expo Shanghai mascot, have been greeting Hangzhou citizens and tourists near the West Lake at the gate of the famous Louwailou Restaurant, The mascots, each over 1 meter high, are part of Hangzhou's "Welcome Expo, Appreciate Masterpieces and Enjoy Delicacies" initiative.
Quietly does it
THE new Hangzhou Environmental Noise Control Regulation which came into effect yesterday, involves not only the Hangzhou city center, but also seven other districts and counties including Yuhang and Xiaoshan.
The new regulation will cover aspects not included before such as the noise of car alarms, pets and interior decoration.
At the same time, the regulation lists hotlines and complaint call numbers for different noises while many, such as car alarms and dog barking, can be directly reported to 110.
Smoker detained
THE first citizen to fall foul of Hangzhou's new rules about smoking in public places was fined 50 yuan (US$7) recently and the one who informed on him, a citizen from Lishui surnamed Wang, was awarded 5,000 yuan.
But it was not just a simple case of smoking in the wrong place. On March 19, when Wang tried to tell a citizen surnamed Chen not to smoke in the elevator of a hotel, he was hit by Chen and suffered a severe injury.
Of course the 50-yuan fine was far from enough for such a crime. On March 24, Chen was put in criminal detention.
Bus stop info
HANGZHOU'S 200 bus stops have been fitted with a barcode system to enable citizens to use their cellphones to find out about transportation, entertainment and map information around the stop.
After downloading certain software to their cellphones, users can then scan the code with the phone's camera to receive the information.
The map will include details of roads, landmark buildings and entertainment information, as well as transportation conditions such as bus transfers and estimated arrival times.
The system has been introduced by China Mobile's Hangzhou branch and Hangzhou Public Transportation Cooperation. A total of 9,000 bus stops and public bicycle stops over the city will be fitted with the system by July.
