Tunnel progress

THE Qingchun Road Tunnel will open at the end of December.

The 4,180-meter-long tunnel under the Qiantang River will be the best route for drivers traveling from downtown to the airport before the airport expressway is built.

The tunnel connects with Xintang Road in the north and Qingchun Road E. in the south. The illumination and power distribution systems are now being debugged.

Landscape honor

The renovation project of West Lake has won the honor awards in analysis and planning category by the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Hangzhou began West Lake's comprehensive protection and renovation project in 2001. The city has been honored as "Best City in China" for the past five years since 2005.

Protection of the West Lake is the most important factor in getting the prize, said Sun Zhe, deputy director of the West Lake Scenic Spot Management Committee. He said the city will continue to seek heritage status for the lake by UNESCO.

Big bangs

Six accidents involving large passenger buses took place in Zhejiang Province in October, leaving seven people dead and 19 others injured, Zhejiang traffic police said recently.

Road accidents involving passenger vehicles have been frequent this year. Police reported 1,130 accidents that claimed 299 lives and injured 1,398 people. Comparison is not available.

In nearly 91 percent of the cases, the bus drivers violated traffic regulations and were to blame for the accidents, according to traffic police.

For the next 50 days, the traffic police will check each passenger bus with seven or more seats for safety problems and crack down on any irregularities.

Goat pot

The annual Goat Pot Festival gets underway next Thursday in Cangqian Town, offering three months of all things goat - from fighting goats to cooking and eating goat pot stew.

In traditional Chinese medicine, goat is a famous men's tonic containing yang (hot) energy and it's popular in fall and winter.

Poetry about goats and traditional paintings featuring goats are part of the festivities, as well as various culture seminars.

There's easy access to Cangqian Town: buses are now running from downtown Hangzhou to the town through December 31.

Towed treasures

Nobody has claimed towed cars - including almost 50 luxury imports, Hangzhou police reported.

The autos include 20 Mercedes-Benz, 24 BMWs, two Porsches and one Cadillac.

Last Friday authorities urged owners to pay fines and pick up their cars from lots across town.

Police said some cars were parked illegally, some were abandoned, some were smuggled, some have false license plates and some are linked to robberies. They came from around the country.

Also awaiting pick up are 2,418 motorcycles and 253 tricycles, said the Hangzhou vehicle-towing center where vehicles have been stored for as long as seven years, filling up 11 lots across the city.

Library links

The Hangzhou Library will cooperate with the library of Ireland's University College Cork.

A recent agreement provides for exchanges of books and periodicals as well as staff exchange beginning next year.

The state library of Queensland, Australia, will also enter into an exchange agreement, the Hangzhou Library said.
