US job fair
A delegation of executives from more than 20 Hangzhou enterprises held an employment and investment fair in Silicon Valley in California, the United States, on Saturday to attract overseas Chinese students and professionalsto Hangzhou.
More than 600 Chinese students and professionals gathered at the Santa Clara Convention Center for job interviews and business talks with these Hangzhou enterprises. The fair ended with 31 signed contracts and 178 letters of intent for investment projects involving 1.21 billion yuan (US$186 million).
Hangzhou also unveiled the Business Incubator for Returned Chinese Students, a joint venture with Tsinghua University, at the fair.
A day earlier, the delegation visited eBay and Apple Co headquarters. Hangzhou is developing 10 key industries, such as culture and creative industry, software industry, biomedicine industry, environmental protection industry and new-energy industry, during the 12th Five-Year Plan period from 2011 to 2015.
Danger drinks
Hangzhou Industrial and Commercial Administration has ordered all supermarkets and department stores in the city to check for drinks from Taiwan that may contain a carcinogenic additive.
Wal-Mart has removed all Yes brand sports drinks from its shelves and local retailers were told to stop selling the tainted products, the bureau said earlier this week.
According to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, 792 cases of tainted Taiwan-made beverages entered the mainland market through Shanghai in March. Of these, 274 cases have entered the local supermarkets.
Last week the Yu Shen Spice Co Ltd, Taiwan's biggest food additive supplier, was found using DEHP, a plastic polymer as a thickening agent.
DEHP-tainted drinks, jam, yoghurt, fruit juice and health foods were sold in 10 countries and regions, including the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, the United States, Vietnam and the Philippines, according to the Taiwan Department of Health. More than 40 food manufacturers, including popular brands such as Yes, Triko and Sunkist, are customers of Yu Shen Spice Co Ltd.
Taiwan has started a massive recall of tainted food and has reported the case to the World Health Organization.
Children's week
The China Wetland Museum in Hangzhou is holding a 4D film week until Sunday.
On Sunday, the World Environment Day, the museum will also hold a flea market for children. The event is intended to raise youngsters' awareness of environmental protection.
In addition, a children's art show is currently being held in the museum, featuring more than 120 paintings by local students.
Charity auction
Hangzhou residents and enterprises donated 34,250 yuan (US$5,269) through a charity auction held at the Huanglong Sports Center on Saturday.
The sold items included 127 photographs provided by the Daily Business newspaper and home appliances donated by other companies. The raised money was later presented to the Hangzhou Orphan Care Foundation.
Getting creative
Hangzhou government aims to expand its cultural and creative industry this year.
It plans to set up 16 city-level cultural and creative industry parks with an aim of attracting 4,000 enterprises by the end of this year.
Last year, the sector posted a turnover of 70.2 billion yuan (US$10.83 billion), 11.8 percent of the city's GDP and a 16.2 percent rise from 2009.
The city's cultural and creative industry ranks the third largest in China after Shanghai and Beijing, according to a recent survey.
Academy art show
China Academy of Art is exhibiting the works of its graduates simultaneously on its three campuses in Nanshan, Xiangshan and Zhangjiang, Shanghai.
The exhibitions have two parts, one presenting all the works by this year's graduates until Tuesday, the other featuring the most outstanding works from June 11 to 17.
The school will also hold an opera performance today. All these shows and exhibitions are open to the public.
The exhibition organizer said about 4,000 art works of different styles are displayed in the three venues totaling more than 12,000 square meters.
