US photographer explores issues dear to women

PRETTY women are often subjects in photos. But American female photographer Patty Carroll covers her models in opulent fabrics and then shoots them for her “Anonymous Women” series.

The exhibition is ongoing at Zhejiang Art Museum until March 29 and is part of the museum’s Women’s Month.

Carroll is a Chicago photographer specializing in contemporary themes with a vintage look and an Adobe Certified Instructor.

More than 40 photos feature faceless women camouflaged in their own clothes.

Most of the photos carry a vintage housewife feel and the models, with unseen faces, are seen trying on new hats or wigs and doing other domestic things.

Carroll says the series is layered, exploring how domesticity oppresses women while also examining how “women are seen in the world.”

She also makes an accompanying video series of the models attempting to do everyday tasks — like slicing fruit or watering a plant — while encumbered by the weight of fabric.

“Some see humor from the project while some see darkness, I expect people have their own interpretation,” Carroll says.

The artist also says she may have been influenced by her upbringing as she went to a Catholic school for 12 years and all the nuns wore habits.

Curator Zheng Jia says “Carroll’s works are relaxing, elegant and thoughtful, unlike other feminist works that can be harsh and critical.”

Date: Through March 29 (closed on Mondays)
