Warm charity shoes

A group of retired women in Shangcheng District donated more than 3,000 pairs of cotton-padded shoes they made by hand over the past 13 years.

Yu Danzhen initiated the charity project in 2003 when she saw some old men in a nursing home in Qingbo community who did not have warm shoes for the winter. Initially, she made 30 pairs of shoes for them.

After a devastating earthquake in southwestern Sichuan Province in 2008, she organized a group of retired women to make 145 pairs of cotton-padded shoes within one week to send to survivors.

They collected old clothes and turned them into shoes. Although each of them is on a small pension, they spent an additional 1,000 yuan (US$160) a month to buy additional materials.

More and more women joined Yu’s shoe-making co-op, and today, members range in age from 40 to 60.

When they heard that children living in a remote mountain region in southwestern Sichuan Province walked without shoes for six hours a day to go to school, Yu and her group made 60 pairs of shoes for the kids. They also sent 100 pairs of cotton-padded shoes to students in Qingtian County in Zhejiang Province in November 2012.
