Water travel
HANGZHOU will offer three new attractive water travel routes later this year, which will accomplish the goal of making Hangzhou a famous water travel destination.
They are: Chengxi water bus route, Shangtang River water bus route and Donghe River-Zhonghe River water bus route. The Chengxi area is a densely populated area and a high-tech industry zone, attracting an increasing number of visitors on the way to the Xixi Wetland. Traffic is very congested and the new route will improve transport.
There are three water travel routes in operation since 2008: Grand Canal-Yuhangtang River-Xixi Wetland; Grand Canal-Qiantang River; and Grand Canal-Shangtang River-Yuhang Tiandu City. They combine the Grand Canal, Xixi Wetland and Qiantang River.
Charity auction
Twenty-one paintings were auctioned for charity this week by the Hangzhou Foundation for Justice and Courage.
They were donated by the Qiantang Calligraphy and Painting Institute for the sale on Tuesday. The foundation was established in 1992 and awarded around 320 "good Samaritans."
The next charity art auction will be held in October. Paintings and other art works can be sent to 155 Hefang Street. Call (0532) 8728-0099 for more information. All auction proceeds will go to charity.
Foodie fest
Salted Southern Song Dynasty Bamboo Shoots, Beggar's Chicken, West Lake Xumeiniang Dessert - these famous standouts of Hangzhou cuisine attracted large crowds to the recent Hangzhou Food Culture Festival in Taiwan.
It was the second such festival and attracted many people from Taiwan.
The event included cooking demonstrations, tastings, forums and exhibitions.
"Cuisine and food culture are common interests worldwide and through this festival people can learn more about Chinese cuisine history. Local people had a great and unforgettable time," said Ye Ming, deputy Party Secretary of Hangzhou.
Water fun
More than 20 teams from home and abroad are taking part in the Shuangxi Water Carnival, which is running through September 20.
The carnival, which opened on July 23, features numerous water sports. More than 50 children with disabilities were invited to the opening and toured the venue.
Sort garbage
Around 200,000 people from more than 49,700 families in Hangzhou are taking part in garbage sorting and recycling, according to the Hangzhou Urban Management Office.
Residents are using free biodegradable bags for organic kitchen waste that is dumped in an ecological composting landfill.
Surveys show that many residents prefer using free plastic shopping bags for garbage, but plastic is not biodegradable and using it interferes with natural composting and decomposition of organic waste.
The government is undertaking educational programs to inform people of the need to sort waste properly and not to use plastic bags.
Costly homes
The price for residential houses in Hangzhou is on the rise and residents are deeply worried that housing is beyond their reach.
In July prices hit 25,840 yuan (US$3,813) per square meter for new apartments.
Though prices continue to rise, only 7,182 units were sold in Hangzhou in the first six months of the year, Ta Kung Pao reported.
Tea exports
Hangzhou's tea exports rose dramatically in the first half of the year, compared with last year, according to the Hangzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.
Exports were valued at US$18.84 million, an increase of 42.84 percent from a year earlier.
Purchases by Japan, the European Union and America rose as economies weathered the economic storm.
The top three exported teas are green tea, jasmine tea and oolong tea, of which jasmine tea increased the most, around 119 percent in volume and 53 percent in value.
Green tea export volume increased by 15 percent and value by 25 percent. Oolong tea export volume increased by 35 percent and value by 35 percent.
Japan's purchases increased by 14 percent in volume and 39 percent in value. EU imports rose by 150 percent in volume and 153 percent in value. American imports rose by 97 percent in volume and 89 percent in value.
Officials said Hangzhou enterprises responded to the financial crisis in a timely manner by adjusting its export product mix.
