Weather network
HANGZHOU has set up a weather monitoring network to cover the West Lake area.
The system that monitors wind, rain, temperature, humidity and soil is the first in China to focus solely on a tourist attraction.
Four automatic weather stations have been set up around the lake while three have been erected on top of surrounding hills to measure wind. In addition, the meteorological bureau installed a set of thunder detectors to provide thunderstorm alerts in time. Two acid rain monitoring stations have been set up in order to protect old architectural works and carvings in the West Lake area.
Digital media
Hangzhou will be turned into the nerve center of Internet creativity on September 18 when top global decision makers fly in for the 2011 Global Digital Media Advertising Convention.
As one of the important convention events of the 2011 World Leisure Expo, this grand convention is hosted by the Hangzhou municipal government and Panshi Information Technology Corporation.
With the rapid development of global digital media industry, the convention promises to be an interesting event.
During the convention, elite politicians, experts, scholars, Davos World Economic Forum members, as well as domestic and foreign media members will gather in Hangzhou and participate in three forums to discuss hot topics and draft a blueprint for future development.
Student start-ups
Hangzhou has offered loans totaling 620 million yuan (US$97.17 million) in the past three years to help college students start their own businesses as part of efforts to boost youth employment.
The city offered the loans to 2,478 students and helped 20,000 people get employed.
The college students usually start their own businesses in information technology, retail trade, culture and innovation, development and manufacturing, training and consultation or services.
According to a survey conducted by Hangzhou Youth League, 49.4 percent of college students who set up their own companies said that their businesses had financial difficulties.
Companies fined
Five real estate companies were fined a total of 1.61 million yuan (US$252,821) by the Hangzhou Price Bureau for violating pricing regulations.
According to the price bureau, a special examination on house pricing has been carried out since July to maintain order in the property market.
Seventeen examination groups inspected a total of 138 buildings on sale. Five companies were found to have irregular practices such as a lack of visible pricing boards and incomplete pricing breakdowns.
The five companies were Hangzhou Vanke Junyuan Company Real Estate Corporation, Hangzhou Qianjiang City Development Company, Zhejiang Qianjiang Real Estate Group Company, Hangzhou Huahongyimei Real Estate Development Company and Zhejiang Kunlun Group.
The Hangzhou Price Bureau stressed that all the real estate sellers had to display prices in a visible position in a trade center, list all the necessary information about the apartments and publish all the apartments on sale at one time.
Airport security
Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport has tightened security checks after a passenger on a flight in Chengdu falsely claimed to have a bomb in his luggage on Sunday.
Hangzhou's airport is already carrying out more careful examinations.
New posters were put up to remind passengers not to carry lithium batteries and liquids.
Loudspeakers were also installed in the waiting area to inform passengers not to carry any contraband items.
Hot air balloons
Flying performances, contests, romantic marriages in the air and other hot air balloon shows will be highlights of the International Hot Air Balloon Festival scheduled for Qiandao Lake on September 17.
On the ground, performing artists, including the three finalists from last season's China's Got Talent TV show, will entertain crowds.
In addition, the national open water swimming race, a golf invitational and international road cycling race will take place during the festival to form part of the Hangzhou Leisure Expo this year. The two-month Leisure Expo will end on November 18.
