Welcome whales
THREE young beluga whales from Russia are getting comfortable in their new home in the Hangzhou Polar Ocean Park.
Belugas are small whales, sometimes called white whales, mainly inhabiting the Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. They are related to narwhals.
There is one male and two females, all between three and four years old.
They are considered calves because the mammals can live longer than 50 years.
One is 5 meters in length and the other two are about 3 meters long. They weigh 400 to 500 kilograms.
The Hangzhou Inspection and Quarantine Bureau immediately isolated them in quarantine.
Railway bridge
The new Qianjiang High-Speed Railway Bridge has been completed and both sides were joined in the middle this week.
The railway bridge, extended from three to seven tracks, will open next year.
At a length of 2,222 meters, it will become the world's longest, high-speed, continuous beam railway bridge.
The Qianjiang Railway Bridge is a key project of the Hangzhou to Ningbo (Zhejiang Province), Shanghai to Kunming (Yunnan Province) high-speed passenger line.
The bridge will ease congested transport across the Qiantang River.
Contractors had to solve many technical and engineering problems. The bridge now represents six No. 1s for China.
One of them is increasing the speed of building one column from 20 days to two days.
The famous surging tides of the Qiantang River represented special challenges for construction and safety.
