West Lake International Expo offers sublime events
HANGZHOU will become a hive of activity during the West Lake International Expo from October 17 to November 7.
The 16th version of the event is expected to attract 10 billion yuan (US$1.58 billion) in domestic investment and another US$1 billion in foreign investment. Trade turnover may reach 10 billion yuan and organizers estimate about 8 million people will attend the expo.
This year the event includes 50 programs including exhibitions, forums and seminars. The overriding goal is to promote the city’s trade, technology, communications and tourism industries.
The expo extends beyond Hangzhou with 16 cities and towns across the Yangtze River Delta region acting as sub-venues.
Shanghai Daily looks at the expo from 12 different perspectives in which people can participate.
• For those who are interested in business
The Economy, Trade and Technology Cooperation Conference and Forum takes place on October 17, as does the Top 500 Entrepreneurs Roundtable. As two of the expo’s highlights, both events will attract companies from around the world to invest in Hangzhou. Other investment conferences include the Hangzhou Entrepreneurs Conference, the Global Investment Summit, and the Investment Program toward Western China Conference.
• For those who are interested in technology
Hangzhou boasts a booming e-commerce sector and the city will hold the inaugural International E-commerce Exhibition this year from October 30 to November 2. In addition, Hangzhou-based e-commerce giant Alibaba will host a cloud computing development conference on October 18-19.
• For those who are interested in Hangzhou traditions
Experience authentic local folklore at the Wushan Temple Fair from October 16 to 26. The Grand Canal Temple Fair also offers interesting insight into local culture and customs from October 18 to 21.
• For university students
The popular University Student Creative Life Festival, October 17 to 19, always attracts streams of college students.
There’s also the West Lake International Magic Communication Conference from November 7 to 10.
• For women
A plastic surgery exhibition, sponsored by the municipal government of Seoul, South Korea, will be held from October 31 to November 2 during the expo. Top Korean doctors will be on hand to promote their cosmetic surgery skills.
The International Jewelry and Gem Exhibition from November 21 to 24 is also expected to lure numerous women.
Are diamonds truly a girl’s best friend? Perhaps it’s rubies or sapphires, but it could also be emeralds or jade.
• For seniors
The International Chinese Chess Culture Exhibition from October 18 to November 2 and Song Dynasty Chrysanthemum Art Festival from October 28 to November 31 attract many seniors.
• For shoppers
The 2014 Taiwanese Products Expo from October 17 to 20 will display popular specialties, including food, from the island.
The International Computer Festival is on October 24. Domestic and international brands will be on sale during the event.
• For those who are fond of art and culture
Several events are noteworthy including the Contemporary French Oil Painting Exhibition through October 15 and the Cultural Communication Conference between the Chinese Mainland and Taiwan on October 14-15. Don’t forget the Historical Cultural Buildings Forum from October 16 to 19.
• For those who want to purchase an apartment, car or furniture
If you are preparing to buy an apartment, check out the Zhejiang Province Real Estate Expo from October 24 to 27 at the Peace International Conference and Exhibition Center.
The West Lake Expo Auto Show takes place from October 16 to 20 and October 29 to November 2. You may expect to see all the latest models from both foreign and domestic carmakers.
The Hangzhou Livable Life Festival at New Era Plaza through November provides some good advice on how to select the right furniture for your home.
• For young designers
Last year was the first time the prestigious Asia Design Management Forum was held in Hangzhou. More than 30 famous designers participated in the forum, making it one of the expo’s most popular programs. This year, a creative exhibition from November 6 to 9 has been added.
The International Silk Expo and Women’s Apparel Exhibition, tomorrow through Monday, may also appeal to young designers.
• For overseas returnees
In recent years, the Hangzhou government has introduced policies to attract returning Chinese.
The 2014 Overseas Elite Entrepreneurship Summit from October 22 to 24 is one the government’s endeavors to help returning Chinese start a business in the city.
• For tourists
The Hangzhou government has launched several new tourism products and sightseeing routes which tourists could explore during the West Lake Expo International Tourist Festival from October 16 to November 8.
Meanwhile, the 2014 China Hangzhou Leisure Industry Development Forum on October 27-28 provides an overview of the city’s recreation and leisure industry.
