Interested logo designers can submit their works before December 18 to wlhlogo@163.com or mail it to 89 Nanshan Road, West Lake Museum, Hangzhou, China. Postal code is 310002.
The new logo will widely be used for activities, booklets, maps, traffic signs, scenic spots and souvenirs.
The World Heritage Committee inscribed West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou on UNESCO's World Heritage List on June 24.
Man swallows frogs
A HANGZHOU man swallowed 12 live frogs believing the amphibians would cure his chronic back pain, the Chinese Journal of Health Laboratory Technology reported in its newest issue.
The man, 58, had a herniated disc in his lower back, and, despite undergoing medical treatment, felt no improvement. Last year he heard that swallowing wild frogs could stop the pain. He caught wild frogs himself and swallowed 12 over two days - two frogs at a time, three times a day.
But the next day he developed a high fever and his lungs became infected.
Doctors found sparganosis mansoni, a parasitic worm often found in wild frogs in the area, in the man's excrement. Three days later his fever was gone but his back pain remained.
The parasites are not found in bullfrogs, which are popular among local diners, at Hangzhou markets as they are domestically raised, according to Xu Weimin, a director from Hangzhou Disease Prevention and Control Center.
International Day
THE organizer of Hangzhou International Day is inviting residents to contribute ideas for cross-culture dialogue programs for foreigners in the city.
International Day activities will be held from March to June next year in order to integrate Chinese and foreign cultures and make overseas residents feel more welcome in the city. More locals are invited to take part.
The series of programs are divided into three categories: our international friends; dialogue on lifestyle and culture in the East and West; and International Day experience venues.
Contributors can download and submit recommendations to the organizer by e-mail hzguojiri@126.com, phone (0571) 8525-1744, or at www.urbanchina.org, www.hangzhou.com.cn or www.cityhz.com.
New species found
A STUDENT from Hangzhou Normal University has found a new species of protozoa in West Lake.
Jiang Chuanqi, 23, found the tiny organism during a research program she conducted from November 2010 to April 2011.
The new species, named Hangzhou epistylis, is shaped like a tree when viewing it through microscope and it is very stable in water.
Bigger mailboxes
Hangzhou post offices plan to replace 570,000 old mailboxes in the city within three years.
The new mailboxes are big enough for a magazine to be delivered with ease. Old mailboxes are much too small for magazines. The new mailboxes can improve magazine and newspaper delivery by 20 percent.
The old steel mailboxes in Xihu District have all been replaced with new stainless steel silver ones.
Car dealers fined
THE Hangzhou Price Bureau this week ordered nine Honda dealerships in the city to pay combined fines of 3 million yuan (US$471,810) for price manipulation.
The nine dealers, including Zhejiang Zhitian Automobile Co Ltd, was found guilty of holding monthly meetings to set price floors for products dating back to January this year.
Zhejiang Zhitian was ordered to pay a 500,000 yuan fine, Hangzhou Guanghe Auto Sales Co Ltd was fined 400,000 yuan and seven other dealers were fined 300,000 yuan each for violating China's Price Law.
In a regular meeting on August 27, the nine dealers set the minimum price of the 2011 Honda HG7241A at 201,800 yuan, 28,000 yuan lower than the suggested price of 229,800 yuan.
