West Lake seeks logo to herald status as a world landmark
A worldwide search is on to select a striking logo to represent West Lake, which achieved UNESCO Cultural Landscape Heritage in June.
Ten finalists have been chosen from among 1,500 submissions from around China, as well as other countries, including India, the UK and France.
They have been posted online for voting, which closes at 10pm on Friday; on-site balloting is underway todayand tomorrow.
"After the UNESCO designation, West Lake urgently needs an eye-catching, creative, and meaningful logo, which can represent the combined elements of West Lake and world heritages," reported the Xinhua new agency.
Two of the 10 finalist designs were submitted by Benkritly Nouria from Algeria, who is studying at the Chinese Academy of Art in Hangzhou.
"I live around the lake and have deep feeling for it," says Nouria.
"Before I submitted my work, I visited West Lake many times and made innumerable drafts."
Another one of the 10 finalists is designer Huang Guanghui from Macau.
The winner will be announced as early as Saturday and based on public vote. Residents and tourists can vote online at (http://hzwestlake.gov.cn/Logo_vote/default.aspx).
They can also cast an on-site ballot today and tomorrow from 9am to 4pm at the Sixth Park beside West Lake.
The logo may be modified by a panel of experts. It is expected to be released early in the New Year.
