West Lake top icon
The West Lake, Alibaba, Qiantang River tidal bore, and Longjing tea are the top four icons of Hangzhou, according to a local government survey of 116 local expats.
The West Lake received 74.1 percent of the votes as the city icon, followed by Alibaba with 17.2 percent, Qiantang River tidal bore and Longjing tea with 2.6 percent each.
More than 90 percent of the expats expressed satisfaction for working and living in Hangzhou; 87.9 percent were happy with the city’s public security; 80 percent liked the convenience of shopping; 73.1 percent spoke highly of local dining; 71.3 percent praised the city’s law enforcement; 71.3 percent liked local entertainment venues; and 70 percent were positive about political transparency.
Hangzhou needs an efficient public transport system to connect the airport, railway stations, central business districts, and the West Lake, said Michael Weber, a German scholar living in the city.
Hannah Lund, an American student attending a school in the city, said that it’d be great if Hangzhou provides more bilingual information, bilingual maps and bilingual traffic signs.
