West Lake wows UNESCO
AS a great landscape fusing and balancing the beauty of nature, humanity and history, the West Lake Cultural Landscape was officially declared to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ten Scenes of the West Lake, based on paintings from ancient China, are protected and maintained.
Since 2002, a series of comprehensive protection projects have been undertaking, protecting not only core areas but also extending to scenic views surrounding areas such as the Beishan Street historic and cultural zone, Mei Jia Wu tea cultural village, Xixi National Wetland Park, among many others.

1987 - Domestic experts proposed to apply for World Heritage status.
1999 - City announced it would prepare to apply.
2002 - Comprehensive restoration and protection projects began.
2007 - Ten New Scenes of the West Lake were selected.
2010 - International experts made onsite evaluation.
2011 - West Lake became World Heritage Cultural Landscape.
