Where the lotus lovers savor the blooms

UNDULATING in the summer breeze, pink and white lotuses are blooming on Hangzhou's West Lake, where lotus has been cultivated for centuries for food and herbal medicine.

At this time, more than 80 percent of the flowers have blossomed.

The best time to visit is not the middle of the day when the temperature can reach 39 degrees Celsius or even higher. Early morning and late afternoon are recommended for better photography lighting, cooler weather and fewer visitors.

Shanghai Daily has drawn up a map with some recommended spots where visitors can appreciate the lotus around the lake.

Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard

This is the classic place from which to appreciate lotus at any time, whether in early morning with great light or at midday when the sun blazes down, or in the evening when shadows fall.

Nestled in the northwest of the lake, the park contains 10 lotus ponds of various sizes and shapes, featuring 61 kinds of lotus. In addition to pink and white, they are red, purple and of lesser-known varieties. The bingdilian, for example, has two flowers on one stalk.

Visitors can not only stand at lakeside or pondside, but also wander through the lotus park on winding wooden elevated planks and bridges.

At dusk, the elegant setting is in harmony with Chinese classical gardens, pavilions, wooden bridges and lotuses.

Beishan Road

Beishan Road, which features plane trees and lotus ponds, extends along the north side of West Lake.

Since it's very hot and sunny at midday, it's best to visit in the early morning or later afternoon and evening.

Visitors an walk or bike along the road, taking in the tall green trees and pink lotuses.

The lotus areas dot Beishan Road at Broken Bridge, the spot opposite Xinxin Restaurant and West Lake Expo Museum (HiCenter).

Hubin Road

Known by locals as the "Parlor of Hangzhou," Hubin Road is not too long but it contains six parks, including No. 1 Park with the city's largest lotus area, covering around 1,000 square meters.

No. 1 Park is at the intersection of Nanshan and Hubin roads.

Another memorable lotus pond lies in No. 6 Park, it's smaller.

Hubin Road on the east side of West Lake offers charming evening landscapes, containing much more than lotus. There are special-effects illumination, a music fountain with spectacular laser and water fountain shows. At night a tour boat takes visitors into the center of the lake.
