Wildlife photographs shine spotlight on creatures big and small

EIGHTY prize-winning works of the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition are now on display at the Zhejiang Museum of Natural History in Hangzhou through July 25.

The competition, now in its 49th year, is led by the UK’s Natural History Museum and BBC Worldwide.

Last year, 43,100 photographs from 96 countries and regions were submitted. The outstanding works were divided into 14 categories including animal portraits, urban wildlife, underwater world, animals in their environment and creative vision.

The overall grand prize went to photographer Greg du Toit of South Africa. He took a photo called “Essence of Elephants.” Du Toit has photographed African elephants ever since he first picked up a camera.

He said his goal is to create an image that captures the special energy and state of consciousness he senses when he is with elephants. His winning photo was taken at a waterhole in Botswana’s Northern Tuli Game Reserve while in a camouflaged shelter that provided a ground-level view.

The prize-winning photo in the animals in their environment category is “The Water Bear,” taken by Paul Souders of the US. Souders visited Hudson Bay, Canada, and scouted for three days before he spotted this polar bear offshore on sea ice. His image reflects the relationship between polar bears and the environment they inhabit — a warmer Arctic makes life more difficult for polar bears.

Pal Hermansen of Norway won top prize in the urban wildlife category. His photo “Life after Rust” was shot in a Swedish automobile junk yard. The discarded cars are now covered in moss and enveloped by brambles, reborn as habitats for various animals.

Date: Through July 25 (closed on Mondays)

Address: West Lake Culture Square, 581 Zhongshan Rd N.
