Wining and dining hot spots

HANGZHOU has been considered a city of romance since old times. Its scenery, widely known legend of love and relaxing atmosphere combine to make it a welcome respite from China's myriad bustling cities.

The city has been named "The Happiest City" in China for five straight years, making it one of the top tourist destinations in the nation.

A trip to Hangzhou on Valentine's Day will make quite an impression with your significant other. Shanghai Daily recommends three areas where restaurants have prepared Valentine's Day menus.

Hubin International Boutique Compound

The compound is home to many luxury brands, including LV and Gucci, and it is also a gathering place of restaurants serving various delicacies and desserts.

Japanese, Korean, Thai and other cuisines are available here.

Located at 9 Hubin Road, Wansui Japanese Seafood Buffet has a cute interior. The traditional Japanese decor provides guests with a comfortable and well-suited environment.

The menu includes sashimi, sushi, teppanyaki, and tempura.

Yogurt Story (7 Hubin Road) is next door. It specializes in frozen yogurt, a dessert similar to ice cream but lower in fat. They have 40 flavors of frozen yogurt and up to 80 toppings.

The toppings range from treats such as fresh fruit, nuts and grains for the health conscious, to gummy bears, cookie crumbles and candy bar bits to satisfy those with a sweet tooth.

Barossa Garden Restaurant & Bar (13 Hubin Road) offers a special menu on Valentine's Day and a wide range of games and activities. There's a fantastic patio area where people can enjoy some romance under the moonlight (weather permitting).

Even the sandwich chain Subway (248 Jiefang Road) has surprises for you on Valentine's Day. All its biscuits will be cut in heart shapes. Meanwhile, Starbucks has designed a special coffee cup sleeve for Valentine's Day. Try the Peach Blossom Tea Latte and Valencia Macchiato.

Siyanjing Area

Siyanjing, literally four wells, at the foot of Yuhuang Mountain, has several youth hostels famous for great food and the scenery. It's a good spot for couples looking for some delicious food as well as accommodation.

The area is famous for its osmanthus trees that bloom in the fall. Although it's not the season to appreciate the flowers, the restaurants remain great places for an alfresco meal (weather permitting) because of the natural scenery.

Meander Tree Inn/Restaurant at 58 Si Yan Jing boasts an artistic design that is compatible with its location that has brought some freshness to Siyanjing.

It features rooms in a huge wooden ship parked at the foot of the mountain.

It sells Italian coffee, milkshakes, cakes and the strongly recommended pirate coffee.

For meals, the Hangzhou dishes are recommended. The chicken pot can't be missed. Western food is also available.

Meander Tree has 58 guest rooms with distinctive styles including Chinese, Japanese and more.

Jiangnanyi Youth Hostel at 87 Siyanjing is probably the best known youth hostel in Hangzhou and this is mostly because of its food.

The youth hostel's chef/boss, Tu Zi, is a self-described backpacker who says she makes great food because she learns everywhere she goes.

Almost every dish at the hostel was created by Tu.

The most ordered item on the menu is the spicy chicken and the pork rib boiled with fermented bean curd.

Most of the tables here are reserved by hostel guests. If you don't book in advance, go early to avoid long waits.

Hurricane Lamp Tribe Inn/Restaurant is in a stone building with doodles on the walls. It has a restaurant on the first floor. The tables, chairs and signboards are made of logs. Real hurricane lamps are everywhere.

The inn started out selling barbecued food and its best-sellers are barbecued mutton leg and barbecued mutton chop.

It is said the chef, and also the boss, learned the recipe at an African restaurant when he was traveling on the continent.

Xihu Tiandi

Hangzhou's version of Shanghai's Xintiandi is a leisure and entertainment block comprising cafes, club houses, restaurants, entertainment venues and shops. It's located along the shore of West Lake and adjacent to Nanshan Road.

Its style is based on the unique garden scenery and historical architecture of the area, so having dinner in such a beautiful place may add more meaning to Valentine's Day.

West Lake Jade Garden Restaurant (147 Nanshan Road) features a beautiful view.

Its serves Cantonese and Hangzhou cuisine.

The chef from Hong Kong has more than 20 years of experience.

Mingtown Café opposite the China Academy of Art is a casual and trendy place among the artistic crowd. It accommodates 50 people for dining, so a reservation is necessary for Valentine's Day.

The cafe serves coffee, pizza and cakes. Its open-air balcony on the second floor is a great venue for a romantic afternoon tea or coffee if the weather is nice.

7080 Garden Restaurant (87 Nanshan Road) is a restaurant well known for its view. The garden-like restaurant boasts sweet camphor and phoenix trees, also lots of nostalgic stuff that echoes the restaurant's name - 7080 means the restaurant is specially for people born in the 1970s and 1980s.

The chicken feet, weever fish stewed in wine, potato with cheese and duck soup are recommended.

It's better to book a table to avoid being disappointed.
