World press photos win top awards

REUTER international war photographer Goran Tomasevic won the grand prize in the China International Press Photo Contest with his photos of the war in Libya.
Awards in the eighth annual competition were announced on Sunday in Hangzhou.
Eighty other entries received gold, silver and bronze awards and awards of excellence in other categories including daily life, public figures, economy and technology.
Around 30,000 photos by more than 2,300 journalists and photographers from five continents were submitted; more than 60 percent of the entries are from foreign countries and areas.
The winning submission by Belgarde-born Tomasevic's comprised 10 photos taken last year during the conflict in Libya; he captured numerous scenes including those of combatants, civilians, rockets and exploding bombs.
Tomasevic will receive a cash award of 100,000 yuan (US$15,864) at an awards ceremony in Hong Kong; the time and venue have not been decided.
"To take photos of war or disaster requires great effort and sometimes even the life of photographers," jury Chairman Zhao Derun said in explaining why the top prize was awarded to "War in Libya."
"What a good picture requires is simplicity, concentration and clarity that conveys a certain message," judge Horacio Villalobos from European Press Photo Agency said.
The 12-person jury includes five members from China and others from the United States, France, Argentina and the Republic of Mali.
The contest is sponsored by the Photojournalist Society of China, Zhejiang Daily Newspaper Group, Organizing Committee of the Hangzhou International West Lake Expo and Hangzhou Municipal Information Office.
