Xia elected
XIA Baolong was elected governor of Zhejiang Province on Monday at the fifth session of the 11th Zhejiang Province People's Congress, the local legislative body.
Xia, born in December 1952, was appointed acting governor last August after the legislature accepted the resignation of Lu Zushan.
Xia, a native of the northern port city of Tianjin, had long worked in his hometown before moving to Zhejiang. He served as deputy Party secretary of Zhejiang since November 2003.
Inflation at 4.8%
Inflation in Hangzhou last year was among the lowest of 36 similar-sized cities in China, Hangzhou Party Secretary Huang Kunming told the annual People's Congress this week. Consumer prices in 2011 rose 4.8 percent from a year earlier.
The figure was 0.6 percentage point lower than the national inflation figure of 5.4 percent.
Food prices were the biggest contributor to inflation. They increased 10.7 percent year on year in the city last year.
Hangzhou's gross domestic product for 2011 is expected to rise 10 percent to 700 billion yuan (US$111 billion), Huang said. Per capita GDP is forecast to have climbed 9 percent to around 80,000 yuan. Infrastructure investment in the city last year gained 17.1 percent to 310.5 billion yuan, while retail sales jumped 18.7 percent to 254.8 billion yuan.
Marriage database
Hangzhou will join the national marriage information network this year as part of efforts to stamp out bigamy, the Hangzhou Civil Affairs Bureau said this week.
The registry in Hangzhou currently only shares marriage information with cities in Zhejiang Province.
The Hangzhou database has records of 2.2 million marriages and divorces, dating back to the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
Thus far, 21 provinces and municipalities have joined the national network.
Top male athlete
Chinese swimmer Sun Yang from Hangzhou was named Male Athlete of the Year at the CCTV sports awards ceremony in Beijing.
Sun, 19, broke the world record in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the 14th FINA World Championship in Shanghai in July.
His time was 14:34:24. That surpassed the previous record held by Australian Grant Hackett.
Just a year earlier, Sun was named Best Newcomer in what is considered China's highest sports awards.
Sun's parents received the award on his behalf as he is currently training in Brisbane, Australia.
The swimmer, appearing in a video link-up at the awards ceremony, dedicated the prize to his grandmother.
Weather radar
Construction of a new radar system that will provide more precise weather forecasts in mountainous areas began last week at Daming Mountain in Lin'an.
The new system will help pinpoint weather conditions accurately within a 2-kilometer radius.
It will mainly focus on mountainous areas west of Hangzhou in order to give earlier warnings about typhoons, heavy rain and thunderstorms. It includes a data-gathering center at Shizi Hill.
The system is scheduled to go into operation in 2014.
Cartoon students
Three children among the 10 finalists in the 3rd I Am King of Cartoons contest were accepted as students by three master cartoonists at the China Academy of Art, Nanshan campus, on Monday.
Huang Yulang from Hong Kong, Xiao Yanzhong from Taiwan and Nie Jun from the Chinese mainland chose their students after talking with each of the 10 finalists in the contest held by Hangzhou Daily.
Huang chose Feng Jianyue as his student. Xiao selected Fang Xiao while Nie opted for Liu Yinuo. All three are girls.
The cartoon masters will teach their students through e-mail, telephone and face-to-face tutoring, Hangzhou Daily said.
